Signs your hose bibb needs to be replaced:

  • Leaking
  • Faucet is corroded
  • Damage to the handle
  • Difficulty turning the handle
  • Low water pressure
  • Freezing damage
  • Flooding in your home

All hose bibbs are equipped with atmospheric vacuum breakers.

  • Modern hose bibbs can’t be under continuous pressure for more than 12 hours at any time.
  • Make sure your garden hose valve and the hose itself are completely drained of all water before the first frost.

Self-Closing Nozzle:

  • Always relieve pressure in the hose upon water shut off to activate the drainage of the hydrant.
  • Remove the nozzle upon the water is shut off or depress the nozzle until the water completely drains from the hose prior to hanging the hose above the level of the hydrant.

Hose Bibbs

Your outdoor hose bibb (also known as a spigot or faucet) might seem like a small detail, but taking care of it plays a big role in protecting your home and plumbing system.

Why Hose Bibb Care Matters

Prevents Freezing and Water Damage

  • In colder months, water left in the hose or bibb can freeze and expand—leading to cracked pipes and costly repairs. Disconnect hoses and shut off water to outdoor spigots before winter hits.

Stops Leaks and Conserves Water

  • A slow drip can waste gallons over time. Regularly checking for leaks and replacing worn washers helps you avoid unnecessary water bills and water waste.

Protects Your Water Supply

  • Hose water can backflow into your home’s plumbing, especially if it’s been used with chemicals or left submerged. A properly functioning anti-siphon bibb keeps your drinking water safe.

Extends the Life of Your Plumbing

Routine maintenance—like cleaning threads, checking for corrosion, and ensuring a tight seal—keeps your hose bibb working season after season.

Keeps Your Yard Flowing

  • Whether you're watering the garden, washing your car, or filling a pool, a well-maintained hose bibb ensures you always have the water flow you need.

Hose Bibb Winter Care

Before Freezing Weather

Remove hoses before potential freezing weather.

Failure to do so will not allow the water to drain completely for winterizing purposes. This will lead to frozen water and may burst. Outdoor taps can also lead to frozen pipe problems and cause catastrophic damage.

  • You should insulate as many of the outside wall plumbing lines as possible.
  • Make sure your garden hose valve and the hose itself are completely drained of all water before the first frost.
  • Remove the hose from the faucet.

Winterize Hose Bibb Shut-off Valve

  1. Locate your hose bibb shut off valves.
  2. Turn on outdoor hose bibb.
  3. Turn off the shut off valve slowly.
  4. Open the bleeder cap and let the water drain.  Note: Have a towel or bowl for water drainage.
  5. Verify outdoor faucet is no longer running.
  6. Leave outdoor hose bibb in the on position.

Garbage Disposal

How to properly care for a garbage disposal system:

  • Run with cold water.
  • Don’t put peels, egg shells, or bones.
  • Garbage disposals are meant for cooked food.
  • Run the disposal before starting the dishwasher.

Common signs your garbage disposal isn’t working properly:

  • Constantly having to reset your disposal
  • Persistent odor despite frequent cleanings
  • Taking too long to breakdown food
  • You begin to hear grinding sounds

Water Heaters

Water Heaters are designed to last many years with outstanding performance and reliable operation. All water heaters will eventually need to be replaced, factors like harsh water and natural gas quality can shorten the lifespan.

Water heaters are often installed in the basement/cellar of a building. They heat water for use in kitchen sinks, bathroom showers, and any other place where hot water is desired.

Signs your water heater isn’t working properly:

  • Fluctuating water temperatures.
  • You have poor water pressure.
  • A leaking water heater tank.
  • If you have cloudy, rusty, or smelly water.
  • Strange sounds coming from the water heater tank.
